Big Idea: Relationship Goal #2: Decide Who You’re Going to Be
Healthy relationships start with becoming the right person, not just finding the right person.
1. Humility Wins (Philippians 2:3–4)
-Humility is the antidote to selfishness.
-True humility means choosing to put the needs/interests of others before your own.
-Long-term benefits: Riches, honor, wisdom, life (Proverbs 22:4; 11:2; 29:23)
2. Curiosity is Caring (Philippians 2:4)
-Show you care by asking good questions.
-Curiosity means listening and taking a real interest in others.
-Helps understand the other person’s values, interests, and uniqueness.
3. Spiritual Growth Counts (Philippians 2:5; Galatians 5:22–23)
-Grow in the mindset of Christ.
-Fruit of the Spirit: love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, self-control
-Being like Jesus shapes you into someone others would want to be in a relationship with.
Living It Out (Decisions to Make)
1. Value the other person as much as yourself (Ephesians 5:21)
2. Understand that relationships are partnerships, not competitions.
3. Have awkward/hard conversations sooner rather than later
4. Honesty about values and intentions prevents hurt later.
5. Recognize small differences vs. major differences in values early.
6. Move slowly to guard your heart
7. Helps maintain perspective and prioritize spiritual growth.
8. Gives time to ask meaningful questions and make wise choices.
Key Reflection / Takeaways
1. Selfishness damages relationships and reputation; humility and curiosity build them.
2. Guarding your heart is proactive, not reactive.
3. Growth in character and spiritual maturity makes you “dateable” in God-honoring ways.
